In Madrid there are numerous ATMs widely available. There are also a number of Bureaux the Change in the downtown area. Credit and debit cards are accepted in most hotels, restaurants and shops. Some smaller shops only accept cash when the amount to be paid is less than 10 euros.
Time Zone
Time zone is Central European Time (CET). Daylight Saving time applies.
Climate
Average weather in May in Madrid: maximum daily temperatures increase 5ºC, from 26ºC to 31ºC and rarely fall below 19ºC. In May, the duration of the day is constant, with 15 hours of natural light.
Tipping
Tipping in Spain is neither expected nor mandatory. So use your common sense when tipping because, contrary to other countries, it is not a local habit. Some locals may simply leave the coins they are given as change.
Smoking
Smoking, including electronic cigarettes, are banned in all public places including all enclosed or partly enclosed public areas.
Telephone Codes
Spain dial code information is +34. Madrid Area Code:91. Madrid Dial Code: +34 91.
To make a local call (from Spain to other place in Spain) you need to dial the area dial code and then the number.
To call Madrid from another country (international call) - dial 00, followed by the country dial code of Spain (34), then code of dialled location (91) and the subscriber number.
Shopping
City centre shops are generally open Monday to Sunday until at least 10pm and from 10am. Enjoy your shopping in Madrid, choosing any of these commercial routes that we propose:
- The Luxury Route (gold mile): Serrano, Castellana, Goya, Velázquez, Jorge Juan, Principe de Vergara, Ortega y Gasset, Lagasca, Barrio de Salamanca.
- The Vanguard Route: Chueca, Almirante, Fuencarral, Hortaleza.
- The Commercial Route: Preciados, Plaza de Callao, Gran Vía, Plaza de España, Princesa.
- The Traditional Route: Plaza Mayor, Gran Vía, Puerta del Sol, Avenida de Felipe II, Goya, Plaza de Cascorro, Ribera de Curtidores.
VAT (Tax)
All purchases, are Subject to VAT. This is already included in the Price shown in shop or tickets. Foreigners visiting our country, who do not belong to the European Union can request their return of the value added tax, which they pay on certain purchases. As a general rule, if a tourist who is not resident in the U.E buys a good, he can request a refund of the VAT charged to him. It is what is popularly known as "Tax Free", where the foreign visitor can save VAT on certain purchases.
Safety
The capital of Spain remains one of the safest cities in Europe, although you should, as in most European cities, be wary of pickpockets on transport and around major tourist sights.
Emergency Services
112 is the emergency response centre for the entire country.
Visa Requirements
In Spain, travel visa requirements vary according to nationality, intended length of stay and purpose of the trip (e.g. tourism, studies). Whether you need a tourist visa for Spain or not will solely depend on your passport. Additionally, you should be aware that Spain is part of the Schengen countries. These countries, also known as the Schengen Area, have a strict tourist policy and some restrictions apply to all visitors regardless of their obligation to obtain a tourist visa.
Health
No vaccinations are required for visiting Spain. However, it is important to remember the emergency phone number: 112.
Electricity & Conversions
In Spain the power plugs and sockets are of type F. The standard voltage is 230V and the standard frequency is 50 Hz.
